Ouroboros: The Girdle of Jörmungandr is a free browser snake game built on Norse myth. You steer Jörmungandr, the world serpent, through thirty chapters in four acts. Swallow starlight embers to grow, keep your head away from your own coils, the reef, the drowned and the fire, and hold the ring that keeps the nine realms from sliding apart.
The myth is simple and merciless. Loki's middle child was thrown into the sea as a worm and grew until his body ringed the world. The ring is not a decoration; it is the girdle that keeps the realms from drifting into each other. When the tail slips out of the jaw, Ragnarok starts. In this game the ring is you. Every ember you swallow makes the girdle stronger and your body longer, and every extra segment is a wall you will meet again.
How a chapter works
- Turn, never stop. Swipe, use the arrow keys or W A S D. The serpent moves one cell at a time and never brakes.
- Swallow the embers. Each one grows you by two segments and scores. Chain them within three seconds for up to a ×5 multiplier.
- Do not touch yourself. Your own coils are the only wall you build. The longer you get, the more board you own and the less you can use.
- Shed when the ring closes. Space cuts six segments, slows the water and banishes nearby draugr and fire. Three to start, one more every ten embers.
- Read the warnings. Fire draws a ring before it burns. The tide flashes the border before it takes a layer. Both give you one beat.
The four acts
| Act | Chapters | Where you are | What the sea does |
|---|---|---|---|
| I · The Sunken Cradle | 1–8 | Open water, warm floor, broken ships | Nothing but reef. Speed 4.2 to 5.6 cells per second. |
| II · The Reef of Nine Daughters | 9–16 | The reef that keeps what it takes | Drowned draugr patrol lanes and reverse at walls. One survive chapter. |
| III · The Drowned Hall | 17–24 | Aegir's hall: nine pillars, no roof | The tide closes one ring every 12 to 26 seconds. The board shrinks for good. |
| IV · The Girdle Breaks | 25–30 | Under a sky that is on fire | Fire marks a cell, then burns it. Tide and draugr keep their clocks. |
Why the coil is the level
Most snake games treat growth as a scoreboard. Here it is the level design. At five segments the board is empty. At forty, a third of your routes are your own back. The camera does not move and the maze does not change; you build the maze as you eat. That is why shedding exists. Cutting six segments is not a penalty or a power-up, it is a decision about how much of the board you are willing to give up in exchange for the multiplier you already earned.
The hazards are arranged around that decision. Reef is permanent and readable. Draugr move on a clock you can learn. Fire telegraphs its landing for a second and a half so a death is always a mistake rather than a surprise. The tide is the only thing that changes the board itself, and it warns you three seconds before it takes a layer.
Strategy that actually works
- Bank along the reef, not in the middle. A wall on one side is a free lane on the other.
- Take the long way when your body is short. Late in a chapter distance is what kills you.
- Shed before you are trapped, not after. The cut is worth nothing if the head is already in a pocket.
- Feed the chain, not the score. Two embers at ×1.5 beat one at ×1.
- Runes rotate. Slow, ghost, cut. If the next rune is a cut, you can be greedier with your route.
Technical notes
The game is a single deterministic simulation: a fixed grid, a fixed tick, seeded reef and ember placement, and no physics. The board, the serpent, the reef, the drowned, the fire and the caustics are painted on Canvas 2D; the drone, the sea bed and every chime are built from oscillators and noise through the Web Audio API. There is no image file inside the game, no audio file, no font download and no third-party script. Progress, stars, sheds and your endless record are stored under ouroboros.girdle.v1. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server.

Ouroboros — frequently asked questions
What is Ouroboros: The Girdle of Jörmungandr?
Ouroboros is a free browser snake game built on Norse myth. You steer Jörmungandr, the world serpent, through thirty chapters in four acts. Swallow starlight embers to grow, keep your head away from your own coils, the reef, the drowned and the fire, and hold the ring that keeps the nine realms from sliding apart.
Is this the classic Nokia snake game?
The rules are the same family: you move on a grid, you grow when you eat, and touching your own body ends the run. Ouroboros adds a chapter campaign, a chain multiplier, runes, patrolling draugr, a shrinking tide and fire that telegraphs where it will land. There is also an Endless Coil mode for a pure score chase.
How do I control the serpent on a phone?
Swipe anywhere on the board in the direction you want to turn, or use the four-button pad that appears under the board on touch screens. On a desktop use the arrow keys or W A S D. Space sheds your tail, P or Escape pauses, and R restarts the chapter.
What does shedding the tail do?
Shedding cuts six segments off your tail, slows the water for almost two seconds and banishes any draugr or fire within three cells of your head. You start each chapter with three sheds and earn another every ten embers. A shorter serpent is easier to keep alive, so shedding is both an escape and a sacrifice.
What are runes?
Every seventh ember is a rune. Runes score double, grow you by two segments and grant one of three blessings in rotation: slow water, a ghost body that can pass through your own coils for five seconds, or a clean cut that severs five segments and adds 250 points.
How many chapters are there and how hard does it get?
Thirty chapters in four acts. Speed rises from 4.2 to 8 cells per second, the reef count rises from zero to twenty-eight, draugr patrols go from none to six, and Acts III and IV add a shrinking tide and fire strikes. Each chapter is short, so a death costs seconds rather than a run.
Is there an endless mode?
Yes. The Endless Coil unlocks after chapter eight. One life, no chapter goal, and a wave every eighteen seconds: the serpent gets faster, fire falls more often and the tide closes sooner. Your best score and best wave are saved locally.
