Play Kalliope: The Shattered Fresco — a free Greek-myth jigsaw
Play Kalliope: The Shattered Fresco free. A Greek-myth jigsaw puzzle: reassemble thirty shattered frescoes, turn the cursed pieces, and free the petrified muse.
Kalliope: The Shattered Fresco is a free browser jigsaw puzzle built on Greek myth. One look from Medusa brought the mosaic hall of the Muses down in plaster, and Kalliope, eldest of the nine, turned to stone mid-song. You are her last apprentice: every chapter is one shattered fresco to rebuild, and every panel you finish gives her song somewhere to return to.
The rules are the old, good ones. Pieces lie scattered across a wooden worktable. Drag one onto the board, drop it near its true place, and it sinks into the plaster with a snap. Drop it anywhere else and it stays where it lands. A ghost preview shows the finished picture faintly through the board whenever you want it. And from the third act the curse starts playing dirty: new shards arrive rotated, and only a piece lying true will bite.
How to play
- Drag a piece to the board. Drop it near its true place and it snaps into the plaster. Drop it anywhere else and the table remembers.
- Use the ghost. The Ghost chip shows the finished picture faintly through the board — free, always available.
- Frame first. The Edges chip pulses the border pieces gold for five seconds; a frame turns chaos into coordinates.
- Turn the curse. From Act III pieces arrive rotated. Tap a piece without dragging to turn it a quarter way; it only sinks when it lies true.
- Beat par for stars. Finish at par for three stars; two within 1.7× par. Hints cost twelve seconds each.
The boosters, exactly
| Booster | What it does | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost | See-through preview of the finished fresco on the board | Free — toggle any time |
| Hint | Seats the unlocked piece closest to its home | 3 per chapter, +12s each |
| Edges | Border pieces pulse gold for five seconds | 2 per chapter |
| Tap (Act III+) | Turns a rotated piece a quarter way | Free — the curse just costs time |
The four acts of the restoration
| Act | Chapters | Where you are | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| I · The Silent Hall | 1–8 | The fallen hall on Helicon | Learn the drag, the snap and the ghost; 3×3 up to 5×5 |
| II · The Gorgon's Glance | 9–16 | Wind-tear after the fall | Wider scatter, up to 7×5 panels |
| III · The Petrified Choir | 17–24 | Where the curse plays dice | Pieces arrive rotated — tap to turn them |
| IV · The Last Tessera | 25–30 | The great portrait of the muse | Up to 9×7 shards, dimmed ghost, Kalliope behind the last panel |
Why the par times are honest
Par is not a designer's guess. Every chapter's par is measured from its real scatter geometry — the actual drag distance of every piece at the site's play size, plus handling time and the cost of the curse's turning, times a human friction factor. The bake tool that computes it is the same code the game runs, so the par you see is the par the table was built with. There is no fail state; the clock only decides your stars.
Strategy that actually works
- Frame before detail. Drop the edge pieces first — border tabs only fit one place, and a finished frame halves the search for every straight-edged shard after it.
- Sort by colour as you go. Nudge sky pieces to one side, figures to another. Thirty seconds of sorting saves minutes of hunting.
- Read the ghost in regions. Don't memorise the whole picture — find one landmark (a moon, a column base) and place everything around it.
- Rotated pieces tell you where they came from. A tab pointing inward used to point out; turn it until highlights line up with the ghost.
- Hints are for endings. Spend them on the last five pieces, when the table is sparse and the remaining slots are obvious in pairs.
Technical notes
Everything is generated: no image is loaded by the game, no audio file is played, and no third-party script runs. The twelve frescoes — the Owl of Athena, the Golden Lyre, the Sun Chariot and the rest — are painted on a Canvas 2D surface from seeded code, the classic tab-and-blank cut is computed per chapter, and every snap and chime is synthesised with the Web Audio API. It runs on desktop, tablet and phone in portrait or landscape with touch or mouse (G ghost, H hint, E edges). Progress, stars and your endless record are stored locally under kal.fresco.v1. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server.

Kalliope: The Shattered Fresco — frequently asked questions
What is Kalliope: The Shattered Fresco?
It is a free browser jigsaw puzzle built on Greek myth. One look from Medusa brought the mosaic hall of the Muses down in plaster, and Kalliope, the eldest of the nine, turned to stone mid-song. You play her last apprentice: every chapter is one shattered fresco to rebuild, and every panel you finish gives her song somewhere to return to. Thirty chapters across four acts, plus an endless table.
How do you play it?
Drag pieces from the table onto the board. Drop a piece near its true place and it sinks into the plaster with a snap; drop it anywhere else and it stays where it lands. A ghost preview shows the finished picture through the board whenever you need it. Finish every piece and the fresco comes alive. There is no way to lose a jigsaw — the clock only decides your stars.
What do the boosters do?
Ghost toggles the see-through preview of the finished picture on and off — it is free and always available. Hint (three per chapter, H on keyboard) seats the one unlocked piece closest to its home. Edges (two per chapter, E) makes the border pieces pulse gold for five seconds, which is the fastest way to build a frame. Each hint adds twelve seconds to the clock for star purposes.
Why are some pieces turned the wrong way round?
From Act III the curse deepens: new shards arrive rotated, the way dice are shaken. Tap a piece without dragging it and it turns a quarter way round; four taps brings it home. A piece will refuse to sink into the plaster until it lies true. In the endless table the later rounds also turn the pieces.
How are the stars awarded?
One star for finishing the fresco. Two stars if your time is within one point seven of par. Three stars for par or better. Par is not a designer's guess: it is measured from the real scatter geometry of the chapter — the actual drag distance of every piece, plus handling and the cost of the curse's turning. Hints add twelve seconds each, so three stars means working clean.
Is there an endless mode?
Yes. The Endless Table builds a fresh panel every round from a fixed seed: new scene, new cut, larger as you go, and from round three the pieces start arriving turned. Rounds never get harder than the ghost preview can carry you through, and your deepest round and current streak are kept in your browser.
Does it work on phones and does it save progress?
It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone, in portrait or landscape, with touch or mouse. Restored panels, stars and your endless record are stored locally under kal.fresco.v1. Nothing is uploaded, because the game has no server and loads no third-party script.
