Play Runewall — a free Norse-myth falling-block puzzle

Play Runewall free: a Norse-myth falling-block puzzle. Stack rune stones, close thirty courses of Asgard's wall and free Freya before the frost wins.

Runewall: The Last Mason of Asgard is a free browser falling-block puzzle built on Norse myth. Fimbulwinter has begun: the sun is thin, the road to the rainbow bridge is closed, and the wall of Asgard stands nine courses short. The frost giant Hrímþurs took the goddess Freya as payment for a wall he never finished, and the only person left who can close the gate is a mason with a lantern and a bad hand.

That is you. Stones cut with runes fall one at a time. Fit them into the wall, close a whole course of ten columns, and the course seals itself against the cold. The frost does not wait: it climbs the wall every second, jumps whenever a stone locks, and at one hundred percent the joints freeze and the chapter is lost. The only thing that pushes it back is a completed course — and the deeper the clear, the more ice it melts.

How to play

  1. Fit the stone. Move with the arrow keys or A and D, rotate with the up arrow or X, soft-drop with the down arrow, and hard-drop with the space bar. Every stone is one of seven rune shapes, and the queue shows the next five.
  2. Close a course. Fill all ten columns of a row and the course seals: the stones clear, the wall above drops, and the frost retreats.
  3. Clear deep, not often. A single course melts 10 points of frost, a double 22, a triple 34, and a four-course clear 52. Four shallow clears are worth less than one deep one, and they leave a much worse wall.
  4. Watch the frost. It is the chapter's clock and its health bar at the same time. If it reaches the top, the wall freezes and you start the chapter again.
  5. Spend the Bifröst. Closed courses charge the rainbow bridge. At full charge, press F to sweep the three bottom rows away, drop the frost by 30 and slow the fall for five seconds.

Tiwaz — justiceA crossSliding into a notch that nothing else fits
Algiz — protectionA reversed zigzagClosing the last column of a course in one move

The four acts of the wall

II · The Frozen Scaffold9–16Where the wall meets the weatherStanding rubble, a faster fall, the first rising stone

Why every chapter can be finished

Nothing here is a guess. Each chapter is played to completion by a reference mason that uses exactly the same rules, fall speeds and frost rates the player gets — a bot that places one stone every 0.55 seconds and never sees anything you cannot see. A chapter only ships if that run closes the quota with frost left on the meter. That is also where par comes from: par is the reference time with a human margin added, so three stars means you built the wall at something close to expert pace rather than merely surviving it.

Strategy that actually works

  • Keep the surface flat. A flat wall is a wall you can still repair. Every hole you leave is a stone you will have to spend later while the frost keeps climbing.
  • Build the well on purpose. Leave one column empty and feed it a vertical Isa for a four-course clear. That single clear melts more frost than four singles and buys you the time to fix the rest.
  • Do not rush the hard drop. The frost rises with time and with locks. A stone placed badly costs you both: the frost point now and the repair later.
  • Save the Bifröst for an emergency. Spending it the moment it fills feels good and wastes it. The three bottom rows are exactly where a bad stack hurts most.
  • Watch the queue, not the falling stone. The five-piece preview is the real board. Plan the next shape while the current one is still falling.

Technical notes

Everything is drawn: no image is loaded by the game, no audio file is played, and no third-party script runs. The wall, the runes, the frost, the aurora and the snow are painted on Canvas 2D from the same state the engine uses, and every thud, chime and horn is synthesised with the Web Audio API. The engine is deterministic — a seeded seven-bag, fixed-timestep gravity and SRS wall kicks — which is what makes the per-chapter proof meaningful. It runs on desktop, tablet and phone in portrait or landscape with touch, mouse or keyboard (←→ move, ↑ rotate, space drop, C hold, F bifröst). Progress, stars and your endless record are stored locally under runewall.asgard.v1. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server.

Runewall — frequently asked questions

What is Runewall: The Last Mason of Asgard?

It is a free browser falling-block puzzle built on Norse myth. Fimbulwinter has begun, the wall of Asgard is nine courses short, and the frost giant Hrimthurs is holding the goddess Freya behind an unfinished gate. You are the last rune-mason. Rune-cut stones fall one at a time, you fit them into the wall, and every complete course you close seals another stretch of stone against the cold.

How do you play Runewall?

Move the falling stone with the arrow keys or A and D, rotate it with the up arrow or X, soft-drop with the down arrow, and hard-drop with the space bar. Press C to hold a stone and F to spend a full rune charge. On a phone, swipe left and right to move, swipe down to drop, and tap the on-screen buttons to rotate. Fill a complete row of ten columns and the course closes and clears.

What is the frost meter?

The frost meter is the chapter's clock and its health bar at the same time. It rises every second and jumps a little whenever a stone locks into place. If it reaches one hundred percent the wall freezes and the chapter ends. Clearing courses pushes it back down, and a deep clear melts much more ice than several shallow ones, so the safest way to play is also the most skilful.

What does the Bifrost charge do?

Every course you close adds rune light to the Bifrost charge. When the charge is full, press F or tap the Bifrost button and the rainbow bridge sweeps the three bottom rows of the wall away, drops the frost by thirty points and slows the fall for five seconds. It is the only way to recover from a badly stacked wall, so it is worth saving for an emergency rather than spending on the first full bar.

How many chapters and acts are there?

There are thirty chapters in four acts: the Mason's Yard, the Frozen Scaffold, the Giant's Shadow and the Gate of Asgard. Each act adds one new pressure. The first act teaches the wall, the second adds standing rubble, the third makes broken courses rise from the floor on a timer, and the fourth combines all three with a much faster fall. Every chapter was played to completion by a reference bot before release.

Is there an endless mode?

Yes. Fimbulwinter has no finish line: courses cleared are the score, the fall keeps accelerating, frost rises faster every wave and broken stone starts rising from the floor sooner. A new wave begins every ten courses. Your deepest wave and best course count are stored in your browser, so the winter remembers where you left it.

Does Runewall work on phones and does it save progress?

It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone, in portrait or landscape, with touch, mouse or keyboard. Chapter stars, unlocked chapters, best score and your endless record are stored locally under runewall.asgard.v1. Nothing is uploaded, because the game has no server and loads no third-party script.
