Elixir Sort: The Bifröst Legend — a free water sort puzzle built on Norse myth
Elixir Sort: The Bifröst Legend is a free browser water-sort puzzle: every vial on screen holds a stack of realm-essences in the wrong order, and your only tool is the pour. Move the top essence of one vial onto an empty vial or onto the same essence, break every stack down to a single colour, and the rainbow bridge Bifröst lights plank by plank — thirty chapters and four acts of Nordic story ending at the ice hall where the goddess Sif waits.
How to play Elixir Sort
- Tap a vial to lift. The top essence rises out of the vial and its realm name is announced. Tapping the same vial again sets it back down.
- Tap a second vial to pour. The essence flows into a vial that is empty or topped with the same essence. Anything else is refused with a shake, because essences never mix.
- Pour as much as fits. The whole run of one essence moves over, or as much of it as the far vial has room for. A four-drop vial holds four drops; a five-drop vial holds five.
- Lock the finished vials. A vial holding one single essence, full to the brim, is stamped with its realm's rune and can never be touched again. Nine essences means nine finished vials and one whole bridge.
- Respect the frozen floors. From Act III some vials have a bottom drop frozen to the stone. It cannot be poured, so that vial's essence is decided before you begin — build on top of it.
The nine realm-essences
| Essence | Realm | Colour |
|---|---|---|
| Midgard Sap | Midgard | the green of every living field |
| Asgard Gold | Asgard | the mead the Æsir drink |
| Vanaheim Amber | Vanaheim | resin from the quiet groves |
| Jotunheim Frost | Jotunheim | meltwater off the ice wolf |
| Alfheim Ivory | Alfheim | light caught in elf glass |
| Svartalfheim Iron | Svartalfheim | forge-water from the deep halls |
| Muspelheim Ember | Muspelheim | a spark that never went out |
| Niflheim Mist | Niflheim | breath of the first cold |
| Helheim Gloom | Helheim | the colour of a closed door |
The rules, exactly
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Pour onto the same essence | Allowed — this is the move that solves the well. |
| Pour into an empty vial | Allowed, but the empty vials are the only working space you have, so spending one is a real decision. |
| Pour onto a different essence | Refused. The vial shakes and stays as it was; no move is spent. |
| Pour into a full vial | Refused, unless the vial is finished, in which case it is sealed and cannot be used at all. |
| Pour from a frozen floor | Impossible once only the frozen drop is left. Everything stacked above it is free. |
| Undo | Free, unlimited and never counted against par. Thinking is not cheating. |
The four acts of the campaign
| Act | Chapters | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|
| I · The Shattered Bridge | 1–8 | Three to five essences, two empty fonts, and the habit of leaving yourself room. |
| II · The Well of Urðr | 9–16 | Six and seven essences at once, and the discipline of never wasting an empty vial. |
| III · The Frost Road | 17–24 | Frozen floors: bottom drops that cannot move, which decide a vial before you start. |
| IV · The Hall of Hrímnir | 25–30 | Nine essences in five-drop vials with two frozen floors — the shape the wolf left in the sky. |
Campaign versus endless
| Campaign | Endless — the Norns' weaving | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Thirty baked chapters in four acts, each with its own measured par | Wells dealt one after another, forever |
| Difficulty | Ramps from three essences to nine, and from four-drop to five-drop vials | An essence every second round, frost from round five, deeper vials from round nine |
| Failing | You cannot fail — you can only spend more pours than par | The same, but the run ends when you leave it |
| Progress | Stars, best pours and unlocked chapters saved in your browser | One best run, kept for bragging |
Why par is a number you can trust
Plenty of puzzle games put an arbitrary "three stars in X moves" line on a level. This one does not. Every chapter was generated from a seed, then handed to the same best-first solver that ships inside the page: the solver had to find a legal line under the exact rules a player faces — sealed vials stay sealed, frozen floors stay frozen — and the length of the shortest line it could prove is the par you are scored against. That is why some chapters ask for ten pours and the last ones ask for thirty-eight, and why the three-star line is always reachable rather than theoretical.
Strategy that actually works
- Finish vials, do not tidy them. A vial holding four different colours looks organised and is worthless. Aim for single-colour vials; everything else is transport.
- Guard the empty vials. With two empty fonts you can almost always recover. Spend one to sort three drops and you may never get it back.
- Read the frozen floors first. Before your first pour, find the anchored drops. Each one tells you which vial is already spoken for.
- Work from the bottom up. The drop you need is usually buried. Move the essences on top of it somewhere legal rather than into a vial you will need later.
- Undo freely. The move that ruins a well is usually two pours back, not one. Undo is free; use it the moment a position feels cramped.
- In endless, count essences, not pours. The wells stop being about cleverness and start being about not locking yourself out around round nine.
Frequently asked questions
Is Elixir Sort: The Bifröst Legend free to play?
Yes. Elixir Sort is completely free, needs no account, no download and no plugin, and it never asks for payment. It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone, and your progress is stored only in your own browser.
How do you play the puzzle?
Tap a vial to lift the essence on top of it, then tap a second vial to pour. An essence only pours into an empty vial or onto the same essence, and a vial that is full or finished cannot be poured into at all. Clear every vial so that each one holds a single essence and the chapter is done.
What is a frozen floor?
From Act III onward some vials have a bottom drop welded to the stone by Hrímnir's frost. A frozen floor can never be poured away, so that vial must end up holding that essence. The rest of the vial works normally: you can pour onto it and take everything above it.
What happens when a vial is finished?
When a vial holds its full complement of one single essence it locks and is stamped with that realm's rune. Each essence only has enough drops for one vial, so a sealed vial is correct forever and cannot be poured into or out of by accident.
How many chapters and how hard do they get?
Thirty chapters across four acts. Act I teaches three essences and two empty vials; the campaign ends with all nine essences in five-drop vials and two frozen floors. Every par line in the game was measured offline: the same solver that ships in the page proved each chapter solvable and counted the shortest line it could find, so the three-star target is a real number and not a guess.
Can I play Elixir Sort on a phone?
Yes, and the layout adapts to it. Vials are re-gridded to whatever space you have, one tap lifts an essence and a second tap pours it, and the endless mode keeps dealing new wells when the thirty chapters run out.
Technical notes
The whole game is a single self-contained page: no third-party scripts, no trackers, no network calls after load. Rendering is HTML5 canvas 2D at device-pixel-ratio resolution — the glass, the layered essence with its meniscus and rising bubbles, the frost floors, the rune seals, the aurora sky and the nine realm-lights of the shattered Bifröst are all drawn in code, and the vial grid is re-laid out from scratch on every resize so the same well works on a 320-pixel phone and a desktop monitor.
The rules engine is deterministic and never calls Math.random(). Each chapter is dealt from its own seeded generator, then solved offline by the same best-first search that runs inside the page when you ask for a hint, which is why par is a measurement and why every chapter in the campaign is guaranteed to have a legal line from the dealt board to nine sealed vials. Hints use a bounded search from the live position and fall back to a ranked greedy line if the position is too deep to prove quickly.
Progress is stored locally in your browser under elixirsort.save.v1: unlocked chapters, stars, best pours, your best endless run and your sound preference. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server.
